The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has called on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to take decisive action against officers involved in the Akwatia by-election violence, during which journalists were attacked.
Mr Dwumfour said the IGP should act firmly to restore public confidence and deter future attacks on media practitioners.
“I urge the IGP to use these officers as scapegoats to redeem his image, he stated.
He made the call while speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, January 28, 2026.
He urged the IGP to build on the working relationship he has established with the media over the years and act on his previous assurances to protect journalists.
The GJA president noted that such action would reassure the media that the IGP still stands by his commitment to safeguard journalists across the country.
According to Mr Dwumfour, the IGP had previously assured journalists that he would personally ensure their safety if no one else did.
The call follows recent attacks on journalists, including an incident involving Class FM journalist Samuel Addo, who was assaulted in Kasoa while covering a fire outbreak at the New Market on January 5, 2026.
Mr Addo has alleged that officers of the Ghana National Fire Service attacked him, seized his phone and money, and beat him, even after he identified himself as a journalist and was filming the scene. The officers involved have since been interdicted, and police investigations are ongoing.
