The Senior Staff Association (SSA) of the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) has expressed worry over embedded power generation on the company’s financial health. Speaking at the 7th Biennial Delegates Congress of the SSA in Tamale, the Association said the situation where individual consumers and businesses are allowed to generate and use electricity, bypassing the national grid, has a significant impact on GRIDCo’s revenue stream.

The Chairman of the SSA, Wisdom Kojo Adenyo, in an address at the Congress, raised concerns that the increasing prevalence of decentralized energy systems poses a significant threat to the viability of GRIDCo.

Embedded power generation refers to electricity generated from small-scale sources, often located close to where it is consumed. While such systems are gaining popularity due to their potential for enhancing energy security and reducing transmission losses, SSA leaders argue that their rise is contributing to decreased revenues for GRIDCo. They assert that as more consumers opt for these alternatives, the centralized grid system faces growing financial strain.

The SSA Chairman emphasised the need to “work collaboratively to respond to the impact of embedded generation and other systemic challenges undermining GRIDCo’s financial  health.”

The SSA also called for an improvement the governance structure and operations of GRIDCo.

The 7th Biennial Congress saw delegates retain Wisdom Kojo Adenyo as the Chairman of the SSA.

Mr. Guggisburg Asante was elected as the National Vice Chairman, narrowly beating Naa Yamoteley Abbey by a single vote in the second round of voting after the first round produced a tie.

The National General Secretary position went to Morrison Edem Essah. Vida Aheto Abakwam was retained as the National Assistant Secretary, while Saani Sulemana, who stood unopposed was confirmed as the National Treasurer with 88 affirming “yes” to his position while 2 voted against him.
