The Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited, Mr. Adam Mutawakilu, has disclosed that the company loses approximately 73 million gallons of treated water daily in the Greater Accra Region due to theft, illegal connections, and faulty infrastructure.
Speaking in an interview on Citi TV on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, Mr. Mutawakilu said:
“In Greater Accra, we produce about 140 million gallons a day, but we can only account for 67 million gallons, meaning we cannot account for 73 million gallons every single day.”
He further revealed that even among the 67 million gallons accounted for, not all the corresponding revenue is successfully collected.
“Even with the 67 million gallons that are accounted for, we are still unable to collect all the revenue,” he reiterated.
Nationwide, he said, only 48% of the water produced is properly accounted for, with more than half either lost or unbilled.
Mr. Mutawakilu described the situation as unsustainable and warned that the persistent loss of over half the water produced severely hampers Ghana Water Limited’s ability to fund operations and maintain consistent service delivery.
