The bodies of Ghana’s Defence Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, and six others have been recovered following a coordinated search operation at the crash site in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.
The recovery effort, led by national security operatives and emergency responders, followed a fatal military helicopter crash on Wednesday, 6 August 2025, which claimed the lives of all eight passengers on board.
The other victims were identified as:
- Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
- Dr Samuel Sarpong, National First Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)
- Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate
- Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala
- Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu
- Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah
Tributes from Parliament
In separate statements, both the Majority and Minority in Parliament expressed deep sorrow over the loss.
Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga described the incident as a “devastating blow to Parliament, the Government, the Armed Forces, and the people of Ghana.” He praised the victims for their patriotism and dedication to public service, adding that their contributions would be remembered in the country’s democratic and national history.
Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin also extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, calling the victims “devoted patriots” who had dedicated their lives to the service of Ghana. He reflected personally on his relationship with the late Environment Minister, saying their shared commitment to national development transcended political divisions.
President orders national mourning
President John Dramani Mahama has directed that all national flags be flown at half-mast for seven days in honour of the deceased. In a statement from the Presidency, he described the crash as a “profound national tragedy” and expressed solidarity with the families of the victims and the nation at large.
Ongoing investigation
Authorities have launched a full investigation into the cause of the crash. Meanwhile, security agencies are working to secure the crash site, and preparations are underway for official funerals to honour the deceased.
The tragedy has cast a shadow over the nation, with citizens and leaders alike expressing grief and calling for unity in this period of mourning.
