Director of the Human Trafficking Secretariat at the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Abena Annobea Asare, has asked parents and guardians to probe further when giving out their wards to seek education and greener pastures.

She said this turns into forced labour, sexual exploitation, and slavery, a development which she described as worrisome.

In an interview with GBC NEWS to commemorate World Day Against Trafficking in Persons taking place/which took place at Mepe near Bartor in the Volta Region, Madam Annobea Asare said many parents and victims of human trafficking are ignorant in their attempt to get help, due to poverty and environmental disaster.

She asked them to be on the lookout for those who recruit people and turn to abuse them and warned against parents who sell their children to traffickers.

Madam Annobea Asare said although Ghana has come a long way to combat the issue of trafficking, more needs to be done to avert the canker.

Ghana is said to be winning the fight against human trafficking following the change in status on the global human trafficking from Tier Two Watch List to Tier 2.

Since 2018, the Ghana Police Service has successfully secured more than 80 convictions for persons involved in human trafficking, a significant improvement from previous years.

This was revealed by the Director of Human Trafficking at the Police Service, Chief Supt Mike Baah in an interview with GBC News to mark World Day Against Human Trafficking.

Chief Supt Baah reminded the public that human trafficking is a crime punishable by a jail term of between 5 to 25 years.
