KOICA Alumni Association Ghana commissions Borehole in Suhum Akote Traio to improve water access

The KOICA Alumni Association Ghana (KAAG) on Wednesday, May 14, 2025 officially commissioned a borehole project in Suhum Akote Traio, Eastern Region, as part of its initiative to enhance access to clean water in rural communities. 

The project aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 6, which emphasizes the importance of clean water and sanitation for all. The initiative aims to significantly improve the health and well-being of community members by addressing long-standing water scarcity issues.

During the handing over ceremony, Vice President Arc. Josephine E. Kpesese, speaking on behalf of KAAG President Mrs. Lovia Afoakwa, highlighted the importance of the borehole. She emphasized that the project is more than just a water source, it symbolizes the association’s dedication to community development and the positive impact of collaboration. 

“This project is not just about providing clean water, it is a symbol of our commitment to giving back to society, using the knowledge and experience we have gained through our various trainings in the Republic of Korea. It is also a testament to the power of collaboration, civic duty, and community engagement”; Arc. Josephine E. Kpesese.

Kpesese further explained that the KOICA Alumni Association Ghana is composed of Ghanaians who have participated in capacity-building programs supported by KOICA. 

She outlined the objectives of the association, which include promoting volunteerism, sharing best practices, supporting community-driven initiatives, and strengthening the bonds between Korea and Ghana through people-to-people partnerships. 

“Our objectives include, Promoting the spirit of volunteerism and development cooperation, Sharing knowledge and best practices gained through KOICA programs, supporting community development through practical initiatives,

and Strengthening Korea-Ghana relations through people-to-people partnerships”; Josephine E. Kpesese. 

The Odikro of Suhum Akote Traio, Baffour Dadebo expressed heartfelt gratitude for the borehole, stating that it would greatly improve the community’s water conditions.

 He assured that the community would take responsibility for maintaining the borehole well beyond its initial installation, even predicting it could serve future generations for over 500 years without issues. 

“We are very happy to have this project in our community and huge appreciation goes to the KOICA team who has made this possible to improve the water conditions in our community. This project will be well taken care of for so many and even exceeding 500 years without any problem”; Baffour Dadebo.

The ceremony was attended by notable members of the Suhum Municipal Assembly, including Mr. Hamidu Osman, Senior Development Planning Officer and Mr. Abdul Mumin Asare, Assistant Director 1. Their presence highlighted the collaboration between local government and development agencies.
