President John Dramani Mahama has lauded his younger brother, Ibrahim Mahama, for his remarkable contributions to Ghana’s mining sector as he receives an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) in Tarkwa.
Speaking at the 18th Special Congregation, the President celebrated Ibrahim’s journey from a childhood fascination with machines to becoming one of Africa’s leading indigenous mining entrepreneurs.
In his address, President Mahama traced Ibrahim’s early interest in machinery, from toys to heavy earth-moving equipment, and his dedication to learning during his time in England while their father was in political exile.
“He could dismantle a toy the next day just to understand how it worked. That curiosity never left him,” President Mahama said, highlighting the traits that would later define his brother’s entrepreneurial journey.
He recounted how Ibrahim, together with a struggling Irish contractor, formed Engineers and Planners, pioneering the path for Ghanaian companies to secure direct contracts with major mining firms. “He showed that with skill, persistence, and integrity, a Ghanaian company can compete on the same level as any multinational,” the President said.
President Mahama emphasized that Ibrahim built his success through hard work, integrity, and resilience. “I have cut him no advantages; every achievement is the result of his own dedication,” he added, noting that the entrepreneur’s company is now robust enough to withstand market shocks and is poised to launch Ghana’s first 100% indigenously owned gold mine.
He praised UMaT for honouring Ibrahim, calling him philanthropic and supportive of education. “By recognising him, the university is sending a message that excellence, enterprise, and giving back go hand in hand,” Mahama said.
Addressing the graduates, the President reminded students that education is both a privilege and a responsibility. “Your degree is not just a certificate; it’s a tool to build your nation. Be bold, disciplined, and ethical in all you do,” he urged.
