Ghana’s leading retail chain Melcom, has officially announced the appointment of Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Awal as its new Director of Communications. The announcement was made at a vibrant press soirée held at the Movenpick Hotel in Accra on August 6, 2025
Dr. Awal, a seasoned media professional, entrepreneur, and former government official, brings decades of experience to the role.
He has previously served as Ghana’s Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Managing Director of the Graphic Communications Group Limited, and CEO of Chase Petroleum.

Introducing him to the media and stakeholders, Melcom’s Group Executive Director, Madam Sonya Sadhwani, described Dr. Awal as a long time friend of the Company with strong ties to its late founder and chairman, Bhagwan Ramchand Khubchandani.
“His deep insight into business and communication, along with his hands on experience across multiple sectors, makes him a valuable asset to the Melcom Group,” Madam Sonya said. “We are confident that Dr. Awal will bring expertise, value, and dedication to the business.”

he opportunity to serve in this new role, emphasizing his commitment to deepening Melcom’s engagement with the public. “In a competitive environment where customers are getting more sophisticated, I’m here to help Melcom deliver better value, stronger connections, and unmatched service,” he said. “With your support, and Inshallah, we will deliver.”

Beyond the major announcement, the evening also highlighted Melcom’s extensive achievements in corporate social responsibility over the years.
Melcom’s Joint Group Managing Director, Mr. Ramesh Sadhwani, outlined the company’s sustained impact across health, education, environmental sustainability, and community development.
He disclosed that Melcom has invested over GH₵20 million in health-related projects over the past decade and currently employs more than 5,500 Ghanaians. The company’s longstanding blood donation campaign recently saw close to 3,000 pints donated in July 2025 alone, one of the highest by any corporate entity in the country.

In the education sector, Melcom has launched journalism scholarships at the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UNIMAC) in memory of its founder, and continues to support the children of its staff with educational funding.
“We believe that empowering future journalists is essential to building a strong democracy,” Mr. Sadhwani stated. “It’s our way of honouring our founder’s legacy and promoting media excellence” he added.
On the community level, Melcom has also been actively involved in community development, from constructing health and office facilities in Dawhenya to being the first company to respond with aid following the Appiatse explosion.
The company has further built school washrooms, supported disaster victims, and received praise from both the Ghana National Fire Service and the World Bank for its commitment to workplace safety and environmental sustainability. A video was shown during the event to highlight these achievements, showcasing real life images of the donations, projects, and recognitions received over the years.

The soirée ended on a high note with a surprise birthday celebration for Dr. Awal, as guests shared laughter, cake, and warm wishes for his new journey at Melcom.
The event also provided an opportunity for networking, with media professionals, company executives, and invited guests engaging in lively conversations and building connections.
