The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has begun a two-day official visit to Latvia as part of efforts by Government of Ghana to seek answers and justice for the late Nana Agyei Ahyia, a Ghanaian student who died while studying at Riga Technical University.

The visit comes amid public concern and calls for clarity over the circumstances surrounding the student’s death, which reportedly occurred under unclear conditions in the Latvian capital, Riga. The Government of Ghana has described the incident as troubling and has emphasized the need for a thorough and transparent investigation.

During the visit, Mr. Ablakwa is scheduled to engage top Latvian government officials, security agencies, university authorities, and representatives of the Ghanaian community in Latvia. The engagements are expected to focus on obtaining detailed information on the events leading to the student’s death, the status of investigations conducted so far, and the steps being taken by Latvian authorities to ensure accountability.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry says Ghana will insist on full cooperation from all relevant institutions to guarantee that the matter is handled with the seriousness it deserves. The Minister is also expected to press for justice in line with international law and the protection of the rights of foreign students.

Mr. Ablakwa has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the safety and welfare of Ghanaians living, working, and studying abroad, noting that the state will not relent in pursuing justice for its citizens wherever they may be.

He is also expected to meet the family of the deceased to convey the government’s condolences and assure them of continued diplomatic support until the matter is fully resolved.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has assured the public that it will keep Ghanaians informed as the mission progresses and as further details emerge.
