Ghana’s largest mobile money operator, MTN Mobile Money (MoMo), has announced a nationwide service blackout scheduled for Sunday, August 17, 2025, to allow for a critical system upgrade.
The downtime will last for six hours, from 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m., during which all MoMo services—including deposits, withdrawals, transfers, and merchant payments—will be unavailable.
The announcement was communicated to customers via SMS on Thursday, August 14, 2025.
Confirming the development, Charles Asamoah Assah, Chief Technology & Service Delivery Officer of Mobile Money Limited, said the temporary outage is aimed at improving platform performance and strengthening system security.
“Please be informed of a planned system upgrade on 17th August 2025, from 12 midnight to 6 a.m. During this period, all Mobile Money services will be unavailable. This upgrade is to improve our services to you. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding,” Mr. Assah stated in an interview with Citi FM.
The move is significant for millions of Ghanaians who depend on MoMo as their primary financial tool. The platform processes billions of cedis in transactions each month and is considered a cornerstone of financial inclusion in the country.
According to MTN Ghana, the upgrade will enhance service delivery, improve transaction speeds, strengthen anti-fraud measures, and prepare the platform for future digital innovations.
The company assured customers that funds will remain secure during the exercise and that full services will resume immediately after the upgrade.
Customers and businesses have been urged to complete all urgent transactions ahead of the scheduled outage to avoid disruptions.
