The National Lottery Authority (NLA) has strongly denied allegations circulating on social media that its Director-General, Mohammed Abdul-Salam, has reduced staff salaries and improperly increased his own pay.
In a press statement, management described the claims as “inaccurate, misleading, and distorted,” insisting they are aimed at damaging the reputation of the Director-General.
No Salary Cuts, but Increment
Addressing claims of a 13% salary reduction, the Authority clarified that no such cuts have occurred since the Director-General assumed office. Instead, management explained that staff have benefited from a salary increase following negotiations with the local union.
According to the statement, the Director-General inherited an 8% utility allowance approved by the previous administration, which was scheduled for implementation in January 2025. Additionally, staff had requested a 20% salary increment.
Following discussions with the union and the Governing Board, a 5% increase in basic salaries was approved alongside the 8% utility allowance, both of which have since been implemented.
Claims of Salary Hike Dismissed
The NLA also rejected claims that the Director-General increased his salary from GHS 38,000 to GHS 70,000, describing the assertion as false.
Management emphasized that the Director-General does not have the authority to unilaterally adjust his salary, noting that such decisions are handled through formal processes involving the Governing Board and relevant state institutions.
It further clarified that ongoing discussions about revised conditions of service are part of a broader review affecting executive management and staff, not the Director-General alone. The review process, which began after it emerged that management conditions had not been updated since 2015, is currently awaiting input from the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission.
Rent Allowance Clarified
On the issue of rent allowance, the Authority stated that any benefits received by the Director-General are in line with established conditions of service.
Management dismissed reports that he receives between $108,000 and $228,000 annually as rent allowance, describing such claims as false. It noted that rent allowance is a standard entitlement historically granted to all Director-Generals of the Authority.
Legal Action Imminent
The statement revealed that the Director-General has instructed his lawyers to take legal action against media houses spreading the allegations without verifying facts with the Authority.
Call to Disregard Falsehoods
The NLA urged the public and stakeholders to disregard the claims, describing them as attempts to undermine the integrity of the Director-General, the Governing Board, and the institution.
Management reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability, stating that the Authority remains focused on its mandate.
