NSS acquires land to augment scheme’s Agric policy

The National Service Scheme, NSS, with the support of the Kumawu Traditional Council, has acquired about 50 thousand acres of land to augment the scheme’s Agric policy and food security.

The NSS is hopeful the initiative will help solve graduate unemployment in the country.

The Executive Director of the scheme, Osei Assibey Antwi disclosed this at the opening of the 13th annual mini-congress of the National Service Personnel Association, NASPA in Ho, the Volta Regional Capital.

The mini-congress, which was on the theme: Working towards the new mission “Deployment for Employment”- NASPA in focus” brought together executives of NASPA across the country.

The Executive Director of the Mr. Osei Assibey Antwi said the Scheme has plans to supply Senior High schools and the school feeding program with its farm produce.

He said the Scheme is poised to lead an agricultural revolution, adding that plans are far advanced to commence work on the acquired land.

“We have realized that if you want to solve the unemployment situation and if you want to help the central government to be able to improve upon our economic situation to get ourselves out of where we are going now, straight away it has to be farming and therefore, National Service in partnership with the Kumawu Traditional Council, the chiefs have done well by availing to us about 200 acres of land and out of it, we have managed to secure 50 thousand acres which we started working on it. Machines are there right now developing the land and we want to go commercial. It is going to serve about three purposes, one it is going to be a practical study field for all those who have done Agric at the various universities. Two, It is going to help in the food security because, we will be producing rice, maize, soya beans and a lot of others”.

Mr Antwi said other areas targeted by the scheme are the youth in Housing, Accounting, among others.

The Chief Executive Officer of “I AM Worth It project, Tammy Sherger who took participants through soft skill training, urged them to be different so as to stand out in the job market.

“The number one change that the youth can make in Ghana today, is if they have the skill set, now they need to work on their mindsets and that means understanding that just because you believe something about yourself it doesn’t make it real, and everyday creating a path to success where you are writing down the things you are good at. So when you go out into the work force, the number one thing you can do is to be different than anyone else. We also have to stand out and you stand out by doing the things that the people don’t do beyond time, deliver right, be confident because you are building up”.
