Chiefs from the Yilo and Manya Krobo Traditional Areas in the Eastern Region have demanded an apology from New Juaben South MP, Michael Okyere Baafi, over what they describe as “unfounded and unacceptable” tribal remarks directed at the Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey.
At a press conference in Somanya, the chiefs said the comments risk undermining national unity and warned against rhetoric that could inflame tensions.
They expressed concern not only about the alleged tribal nature of the remarks but also what they described as implied threats, saying such language does not reflect Ghana’s values of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.
Speaking on behalf of the traditional authorities, Nene Kweku Adamtey, representing the Okper-Adjikpo Asafoatse, condemned the comments and called for restraint in political discourse. He said the MP had been given a seven-day ultimatum to retract the remarks and issue an unqualified apology to the minister, traditional leaders and the public.
In a separate response, municipal and district chief executives, along with constituency chairpersons of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) across the Krobo area, also criticised the MP’s comments.
They warned against what they described as attempts to reduce governance and public debate to tribal divisions, insisting such rhetoric has no place in modern politics.
The group reaffirmed that Mrs Awatey holds her position through lawful appointment and is mandated to serve all residents of the region, regardless of political affiliation, ethnicity or religion.
They urged political actors and stakeholders to focus on development and cooperation, rather than division.
