The Upper East Regional Police Command has intensified a search for a commercial tricycle operator, popularly known as an “aboboyaa” rider, who allegedly assaulted a police officer and fled during a checkpoint operation at Garu on Monday, October 6, 2025.

According to the police, the incident happened along the Garu–Nakpanduri road when officers, working with Community Protection Assistants (CPAs), intercepted a tricycle loaded with sacks of groundnuts and passengers seated on top of the goods.

When the rider was asked to stop and park properly for inspection, he reportedly became aggressive, attacked one of the officers, and sped off before the team could restrain him.

In a statement, Chief Inspector Abdul-Rahman Sumalia, the Public Relations Officer for the Upper East Regional Command, said investigations have commenced to track down the suspect.

“The Command is making every effort to arrest the tricycle rider and ensure he faces the full rigours of the law,” Chief Inspector Sumalia said.

He also appealed to residents of Garu and neighbouring communities to provide any information that could help locate the suspect.

The Command recently stepped up road safety enforcement, particularly among commercial tricycle and “pragyia” operators, amid growing reports of indiscipline and traffic violations in the region.
