The Ghana Publishers Association (GPA) has urged publishers to adopt digital platforms in the publication of books and stories to expand access and preserve Ghanaian culture.

The association said embracing digital publishing could help drive economic growth while promoting cultural heritage.

The GPA’s new council, led by its president Edward Yaw Udzu, aims to position print and digital publishing as complementary tools rather than competing platforms in order to reach a wider audience.

Speaking at the association’s 50th anniversary launch and the unveiling of its new logo in Accra, Mr Udzu underscored the importance of digitising publishing.

“The future of indigenous publishing must be innovative, resilient and globally connected. We must embrace digital publishing, e-books and audiobooks to ensure that Ghanaian content remains accessible in an increasingly digital world,” he said.

The legal practitioner also noted that digitisation could help address some of the challenges facing publishers.

“Technological change, shifting reading habits, piracy and distribution challenges continue to affect the industry. Yet within these challenges lie opportunities for innovation and transformation that can help address these issues,” he said.

The association added that modern regulatory frameworks would help combat piracy, which continues to threaten both digital and physical creative works.
