Government has announced a full nationwide deployment of sanitation personnel and logistics as part of intensified efforts to improve environmental cleanliness ahead of the Christmas festivities.
The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, confirmed that waste trucks, sweepers, and ‘borla taxis’ will be fully operational across the country throughout National Sanitation Week, scheduled for December 13 to 20, 2025.
According to the Minister, the move is aimed at tackling the surge in waste generation typically associated with the festive season, while ensuring cleaner streets, markets, and public spaces nationwide.
Speaking during an unannounced inspection of selected municipalities in the Greater Accra Region, Hon. Ibrahim stressed that the sanitation exercise will not be ceremonial but practical, with all available human and logistical resources placed on active duty.
“From Monday, the borla taxis will be at work, the sweepers—those that are functional—will be at work, and the trucks will be at work,” he stated.
He explained that the full deployment is part of a broader strategy to ensure effective waste collection, reduce environmental health risks, and improve public safety during the busy holiday period.
The Minister noted that Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) will be closely monitored to ensure that sanitation workers and equipment assigned to their areas are properly supervised and fully utilised.
Supporting the initiative, the Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie, highlighted the direct link between environmental cleanliness and tourism promotion, noting that a clean Ghana enhances the country’s ability to attract visitors and investment.
Government says the nationwide activation of sanitation personnel underscores its commitment to delivering visible improvements in cleanliness and environmental management as Ghanaians prepare to welcome visitors and celebrate the Christmas season.
