Deputy Presidential Spokesperson, Shamima Muslim, has emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the National Cathedral project, describing it as a “God project” that should not be embroiled in controversy.
Speaking on GBC’s Current Agenda on Saturday, July 19, 2025, Muslim called for a forensic audit to uncover the truth behind the project’s financial irregularities.
“A God project cannot and should not be allowed to be embroiled in all of these kinds of issues. We must see this investigation to its logical conclusion, one where the mass of citizens will all agree that the outcome was fair and just,” Ms Muslim said.
The government has already initiated a forensic audit into the project, with the Auditor-General set to investigate financial improprieties and procurement violations. According to Muslim, the audit has revealed serious breaches, including unclear contractual terms, overlapping roles, and questionable expenditures.
“Why are there discrepancies in payments? Why are different contracting agencies reporting various discrepancies?” Muslim asked, highlighting some of the issues that need to be addressed.
The project’s cost has ballooned to $97 million, with $58 million already spent and an additional $39 million owed to contractors. Muslim emphasized the need for transparency and accountability, stating: “We need to find out how those breaches occurred. Who was complicit in them? Was there any criminal intent behind those breaches?”
The government is expected to take decisive action after the audit, including determining the project’s future and addressing any improprieties uncovered.
