Former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, has tasked women to demand strict enforcement of laws that uphold their dignity and integrity. She said there are a lot of laws meant to empower women, but the challenge has been enforcing them to the letter.
The former Chief Justice questioned the stalemate behind passage of the Affirmation Act in Parliament.
She urged more women to impress upon the government to ensure its speedy passage.
The Former Chief Justice was speaking at the National Quadrennial Convention of the Young Women’s Christian Association, YWCA, in Accra. The Young Women’s Christian Association, YWCA, is a worldwide organisation of women and girls with a mission to eliminate racism, empower women, promote peace, justice and strengthen communities.
The former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo encouraged members of the Association to be conversant with the laws on issues affecting women. She challenged them to, “speak up against the ills in society’’.
President of the Young Women’s Christian Association, Mrs. Vera Naana Appiah, said some policies should be changed to protect girls and secure their future. She mentioned in particular that the law should be amended to ensure that the age of adulthood per the law should be placed at 18 for both girls and boys, that is, in all instances, and not pegged at 16, when it comes to sexual reproductive rights issues for girls.
