The Management of Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) has responded to viral social media reports alleging negligence in connection with the recent death of a patient at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Ward.

In an official statement released on Monday, April 21, the hospital extended its condolences to the bereaved family and acknowledged the grief surrounding the incident. However, the statement refuted suggestions of neglect and outlined preliminary findings regarding the patient’s death.

According to TTH, the deceased was referred from another medical facility and required a specialized procedure that is not currently available at the teaching hospital.

Compounding the situation, all four of the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds — which serve the entire Northern Ghana region — were fully occupied at the time of the patient’s arrival.

“We understand the public’s concern and the need for answers,” the statement read. “We respectfully urge all stakeholders to remain calm and avoid drawing premature conclusions.”

The hospital has launched an internal investigation to examine the events leading to the patient’s death. Management assured the public that the findings of this inquiry would be shared upon its conclusion.

Tamale Teaching Hospital reiterated its commitment to providing quality, compassionate care and noted that efforts are underway to improve emergency and critical care services in the region.

The incident has sparked widespread reaction online, with many calling for improved healthcare infrastructure and increased ICU capacity in the northern sector of Ghana.
