The Minister of the Interior, Mubarak Muntaka, has cautioned the Ghana police service that the 40 armoured vehicles handed over to them by President John Dramani Mahama are meant to protect citizens and not to intimidate them. He stressed that the vehicles are “instruments of protection, not oppression,” and must be used to enhance police work professionally and responsibly.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony at the Police Headquarters in Accra on Thursday December 4, 2025, the Minister said the move demonstrates government’s strong commitment to strengthening internal security and safeguarding the lives of citizens.
According to him, the new fleet will improve police mobility, boost safety during high-risk operations, and support the fight against armed robbery and violent crime.
Muntaka added that although the vehicles are important, they form only one part of a wider security reform agenda which includes modern training, better welfare, expanded accommodation, improved supervision, and the use of advanced technology to support policing.
He condemned recent attacks on police officers, describing them as unacceptable and a threat to national stability. He warned that anyone who attacks security personnel will face the full force of the law.
However, he also reminded the police that the new resources are not a license for abuse or intimidation. He urged officers to maintain professionalism, discipline and fairness in their duties, noting that the public judges the police by their conduct on the ground.
Muntaka further stated that the vehicles will be strategically deployed across the country based on intelligence, with some supporting highways, high-crime areas and rapid response teams. He emphasized that Ghana is peaceful but not defenseless, and criminals will be tracked down and prosecuted.
He called on the public to cooperate with the police by reporting suspicious activities, saying security is a shared responsibility between government and citizens.
The minister said that the presentation reflects national readiness, unity and commitment to protecting Ghana’s peace and progress.
