The Volta Region House of Chiefs has criticised the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over its handling of matters involving the Volta Region representative on the Council of State, Dr Gabriel Tanko Kwamigah-Atokple.
In a statement dated 7th April 2026, the House said it was “deeply concerned” about EOCO’s conduct in the case, particularly following a High Court ruling which it said found the agency had acted without lawful mandate and breached constitutional principles of fairness.
“The House acknowledges the ruling of the High Court, which determined that EOCO had acted without lawful mandate and in violation of constitutional principles of fairness. The decision of the court is clear and unequivocal,” the statement said.
The chiefs further noted allegations by Dr Kwamigah-Atokple that EOCO had continued its investigations despite the court’s ruling, and had publicly questioned the judgment.
According to the House, such actions are unacceptable in a constitutional democracy governed by the rule of law.
“If EOCO was dissatisfied with the ruling of the court, the lawful and proper course available to it was to invoke the appellate processes,” the statement said. “Resorting instead to actions that appear to disregard the authority of the court amounts to conduct that interferes with the administration of justice and undermines public confidence in the legal system.”
The House stressed that all institutions are bound by court decisions, adding that no public body is above the law.
“The decisions of our courts must be respected under all circumstances. No institution or public office, regardless of its mandate, is above the law,” it said.
It therefore strongly condemned EOCO’s posture in the matter, describing it as a “troubling affront to administrative justice and the constitutional order.”
The chiefs called on EOCO to exercise restraint and fully respect the authority of the courts, warning that disregard for judicial decisions could weaken public confidence in Ghana’s justice system.
The Volta Region House of Chiefs reaffirmed its commitment to defending justice, due process, and the integrity of the country’s constitutional institutions.
