The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has cancelled the subject results of 6,295 candidates and the entire results of 653 candidates for cheating in the 2025 WASSCE for School Candidates.
In addition, WAEC said it has withheld subject results for 908 candidates, entire results for 158 candidates, and that subject results from 185 schools are still under investigation for alleged collusion.
The council announced this in a statement issued and signed by the Head of Public Affairs, John K. Kapi, when it released the provisional results for the 2025 WASSCE for School Candidates.
A total of 461,736 candidates registered for the examination from 1,021 schools, including 254,321 females and 207,415 males, marking a continued gender shift in enrolment. Of these, 5,821 candidates, representing 1.26%, were absent from the examination.
WAEC disclosed that 35 people, including 19 teachers, were caught engaging in acts that compromised the integrity of the exams, and 19 have already been convicted in court.
The results for the 2025 WASSCE show a sharp decline in student performance in Core Mathematics and Social Studies. Only 48.73% of candidates obtained A1–C6 in Mathematics, down from 66.86% in 2024. Performance in Social Studies also dropped significantly to 55.82%, compared to 71.53% last year. English and Integrated Science recorded slight declines but remained relatively stable.
The Council warned the public against result-upgrading scammers, stressing that all results can be verified through its authentication system.
WAEC expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Education, GES, security agencies, invigilators, and examiners for their support.
