The Ministry for Food and Agriculture says efforts are being made to address the recent shortage of fertilizer across the country.

Technical Advisor at the Ministry, Emmanuel Asante Krobea said the shortage among other things was caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. He said the disease made it difficult for government to complete payment to companies that were contracted to distribute the products.

Mr. Krobea Asante told Journalists in Accra, that the Ministry is concerned about the situation and is doing all it can to address the problem.

He said government is aware of the threat the situation poses to its flagship programme, Planting for Food and Jobs and making frantic efforts to resolve the issue.

The Ministry’s assurance comes following claims that fertilizer smuggling is a major contributor to the fertilizer shortage.

Mr. Krobea said while the Food and Agriculture Ministry has a role to play in addressing the situation, the country’s security agencies that oversee activities along the borders also need to increase vigilance to stop the movement of Ghana’s fertilizer to neighbouring countries.
