The New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has denied claims that his religion or ethnicity caused the party’s loss in the recent general elections.
Speaking to party supporters at the NPP headquarters on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, Dr. Bawumia said these claims are false and based on propaganda.
He explained that data from the elections shows he performed better than many of the party’s Christian parliamentary candidates, even in areas with mostly Christian voters.
“I was the only Muslim among ten candidates in the NPP primaries, and the party still chose me,” he said. “The election results prove that religion was not a factor. If people were voting based on religion, I wouldn’t have performed better than Christian candidates in many areas.”
Dr. Bawumia also praised a report led by Prof. Mike Ocquaye, which reviewed the party’s performance. He said the party would make changes, especially to how leaders are chosen, based on the report’s recommendations.
