Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan will be officially unveiled as an ambassador for Ghana Football by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, in Accra. The event is designed to honour his long‑standing contribution to Ghana football and to rally public support for the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
Role and responsibilities
In his ambassadorial capacity, Gyan will lead promotional campaigns, fan engagements, and corporate partnership initiatives aimed at uniting Ghanaians behind the national team. He will also represent the GFA at official meetings and help promote the Black Stars, other national teams, and Colts football nationally and internationally.
Gyan’s legacy with the Black Stars
Asamoah Gyan is Ghana’s all‑time leading scorer with 51 goals in 109 appearances for the Black Stars. He is Africa’s record‑holder at the FIFA World Cup with six goals across three tournaments (Germany 2006, South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014). He scored Ghana’s first World Cup goal in 2006 against the Czech Republic and was central to the team’s historic quarter‑final run in 2010, where he scored three tournament goals.
Impact ahead of the 2026 World Cup
The ambassadorship is expected to deepen fan engagement and boost national pride as Ghana prepares for its fifth World Cup appearance. Gyan’s iconic status and experience will be used to inspire the current squad and connect younger fans with the story and values of the Black Stars.
