Ghana ended the 24th African Athletics Championships without a gold medal after a below‑expectation final day at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on Sunday, May 17. The team finished 17th on the medals table with five medals: one silver and four bronze, falling short of hopes for a strong home‑crowd finish in Accra.

Ghana’s medal tally and key events

  • Medals:
    • Bronze – men’s and women’s 4×100 m relay
    • Bronze – Alex Amankwah in the men’s 800 m
    • Bronze – Florence Agyemang in the women’s 400 m
    • Silver – high jumper Esther Obenewaa.
  • The final day saw Ghana’s last big chances slip away: team captain Joseph Paul Amoah finished fifth in the men’s 200 m final, the women’s 4 × 400 m finished fourth (just off the podium), and the men’s 4 × 400 m anchor bottom with a time of 3:05.14.

Overall standings at the championships

South Africa topped the table with 18 medals (9 gold, 3 silver, 6 bronze). Kenya finished second with 17 medals overall, while Ethiopia placed third with 5 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze. The result highlights both the competitiveness of African athletics and the need for Ghana to target more consistent performances in middle‑ and long‑distance events and relays in future editions.
