Lawyer and Historian, Yaw Anokye Frimpong Esq has expressed confidence in Chief Justice nominee, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie’s ability to uphold the independence of the judiciary, stating that he will be able to interpret the constitution to prevent Parliament and the Executive from overriding the interests of the judiciary.
“I anticipate that Baffoe Bonnie would interpret the constitution to the extent that both Parliament and the Executive would not have anything overriding the interest of the judiciary”, he stated.
According to Lawyer Frimpong, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s previous experience as a circuit court judge has equipped him to handle pressure and make impartial decisions as “he does not fear anyone”.
Speaking on the GTV breakfast show on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, the lawyer also acknowledged that the judiciary protects the rights of the people and so a biased judiciary would attribute to the whole nation’s suffering.
Lawyer Frimpong further highlighted how Baffoe-Bonnie’s experiences would shape his mindset and make him a good Chief Justice.
According to him, Baffoe Bonnie would always remember how he got the opportunity to be nominated Chief Justice following the dismissal of his predecessor, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. He would also remember how for the first time in history, the Minority in Parliament walked out during his vetting process on Monday, November 10, 2025.
According to Lawyer Frimpong, these experiences would shape Justice Bonnie’s approach to the role.
The Lawyer went on to cite the Yoruba proverb, “When the frog in front falls into the pit, the others following take caution,” suggesting that Baffoe-Bonnie will be cautious and work hard to maintain the integrity of the judiciary as what happened to his predecessor could also happen to him.
