The Bawku Municipal Director of Education in the Upper East Region, Mr. Isaac Agbeko Azasoo, has commended the dedicated teacher who has spent 19 years teaching in Bawku despite the protracted conflict in the area, describing his commitment as exemplary and worthy of national recognition.
According to Mr. Agbeko, the teacher’s unwavering presence in the municipality, even during periods of heightened insecurity, demonstrates rare courage, professionalism, and a deep sense of responsibility to the education of children in the conflict-affected area.
Mr. Agbeko noted that while many public servants have requested transfers from Bawku due to safety concerns, a few teachers have chosen to stay and continue impacting lives.

“Such dedication must not go unnoticed. These are the teachers who keep education alive in difficult times. He deserves any award that may be instituted by the Ghana Education Service (GES) or the government,” he said.
The commendation comes on the back of a 2025 feature by GBCNews’ Upper East Regional Correspondent Peter Agengre highlighting the story of Yussif Abdul Fatahu, a teacher who refused to leave Bawku despite the prolonged conflict. In the feature, Mr. Abdul Fatahu cited his love for children and his belief in their future as the main reasons for staying.

“I see hope in these children. If we abandon them now, their future will suffer,” he said in the GBCNews’ report.
Education authorities say teachers like Mr. Abdul Fatahu and others who remain at post under such circumstances play a critical role in maintaining stability and continuity in the school system.
Mr. Agbeko has called on stakeholders, including GES and the government, to recognize and support teachers working in conflict-prone areas, stressing that motivation and recognition can inspire others to serve with the same dedication. The story of these teachers continues to inspire many, highlighting the power of commitment and sacrifice in shaping the future of Ghana’s children.
