Karpowership, a leading electricity producer in Ghana, says it is in advanced talks with the government over an extension of its Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

The company, which has for about ten years been supplying relatively cleaner and reliable power to the national grid, expects an extension when the current PPA expires in 2027.

Karpowership says it remains a key partner in addressing Ghana’s electricity supply gaps, offering rapid deployment and cost-effective power. Operating on dual-fuel engines and gas turbine technology, the system supports base load, mid-merit and peak demand while ensuring efficiency.

The company has operated in Ghana since 2015, relocating from Tema to Sekondi in 2019 to take advantage of natural gas resources, a move it says improved efficiency. With its current agreement set to expire in 2027, the Corporate Communications Manager, Sandra Amarquaye, says negotiations for an extension are progressing positively.

During a media tour of the company’s powership at Sekondi in the Western Region, Ms Amarquaye said: “Karpowership has been producing power since 2015. We started operations in Tema, and in 2019, we relocated to the Sekondi Naval Base to utilise natural gas resources in the western enclave.

“Looking ahead, we signed a 10-year PPA with the Electricity Company of Ghana, and we are hoping to secure an extension. We are in discussions with the government, negotiations are ongoing, and they are progressing positively. Beyond the 10 years we signed, we are looking forward to extending the PPA.”

Journalists toured the Karpowership facility at Sekondi in the Western Region as part of efforts to deepen public understanding of its operations and contributions to the country’s energy sector.

The media was taken through key sections, including the control room, where real-time power generation is monitored.

Addressing the media, Ms Amarquaye said: “At Karpowership, we value the media as an integral stakeholder in our operations. Today, we invited our media partners on board the Karadeniz Powership Osman Khan to give them a practical understanding of what we do.

“Our mode of operation is unique, and one needs to be on the powership to fully understand it. Today, we visited the control room and other sections to see how we operate.”

Karpowership is also implementing initiatives to empower women within its operations, while undertaking several corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects to support communities.

“CSR is integral to what we do. We believe that wherever we operate, we belong to that community. As such, we have invested significantly in the communities where we operate. We started in Tema, and our CSR focuses on education and helping to achieve Sustainable Development Goals 4 and 5, quality education and gender equality.

“We have undertaken several projects in Sekondi, including renovating schools, offering scholarships and running mentorship programmes. We are currently implementing a World Bank internship project for females, aimed at promoting gender equality,” Ms Amarquaye added.
