Ghana’s Apex Court, the Supreme Court (SC) is expected to hear the injunction application filed by three Members of Parliament (MPs) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) against the implementation of the E-Levy today Wednesday, May 4, 2022.

The NDC MPs, who filed the injunction application were Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, MP for Tamale South who also doubles as the Minority Leader, and Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, MP for North Tongu, and Mr. Mahama Ayariga, MP for Bawku Central.

In their view, it is punitive and amounts to double taxation. The Bill was passed by Parliament on Tuesday, March 29, 2022, after the Minority staged a walkout.

The Minority Caucus walked out after their leader Haruna Iddrisu said the NDC MPs remained united in opposing the policy.

On Tuesday, April 19, 2022, the Minority Thrio filed an application at the Apex Court to block the commencement of the E- Levy deductions. But the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) went ahead to start implementing the Policy on Sunday, May 1, 2022. The new tax, E-Levy started on Sunday, May 1, 2022, amidst public outcry.
