CAF President Patrice Motsepe heads to Senegal on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, for urgent meetings with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Football Federation head Abdoulaye Fall.
The visit addresses the explosive CAF Appeals Committee ruling on March 17 that stripped Senegal’s Teranga Lions of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title, awarding it to Morocco instead.
This unprecedented decision has sparked continent-wide outrage, with Senegalese officials slamming it as unjust and vowing to fight back.
The Fédération Sénégalaise de Football has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), while Morocco gears up for a fierce legal defense, promising a drawn-out battle.
Tensions escalate further with the detention of 18 Senegalese fans in Morocco, arrested after violent clashes during the January 18 AFCON final in Rabat. The diplomatic rift between the nations adds fuel to the fire, threatening African football’s unity.
Motsepe’s mission blends administration and diplomacy, aiming to de-escalate, foster dialogue, and avert deeper divisions. CAF sources stress the need for a balanced resolution that honors legal paths amid fan unrest.
