The Cambridge University Rugby League Football Club (CURLFC) has announced its first tour to Ghana, scheduled for July 6-13, 2026.
This landmark visit pits the British side against top local outfits, including Ghana’s national team, The Leopards, the President’s XIII, and the University of Ghana Rugby League Team.
Beyond the pitch, the tour promises community projects to boost rugby league’s grassroots development in West Africa.
CURLFC Captain Owen Hanford radiated enthusiasm for the challenge.
“We are thrilled to test our mettle against robust African outfits and immerse in Ghana’s vibrant culture,” he said, underscoring the club’s rigorous summer training to match the Leopards’ athleticism and physicality.
Hanford also pitched a reciprocal visit, aiming to cement ties with the Rugby League Federation of Ghana (RLFG) and unite fans across borders.
Vice President Tom Allen envisions the tour evolving into an annual fixture.
“Experiencing Ghana while playing the sport we love caps our season perfectly,” Allen noted, calling it a gateway to richer player development through sustained partnerships.
Ghana’s Leopards captain Riddick Alibah fired back with defiance.
“We’re hungry to defend our turf against Cambridge’s storied discipline, this is our statement on rugby league’s rise in Ghana,” he declared, framing the matches as a proud showcase on the global stage.
RLFG Technical Director Marshall Nortey hailed the event as a pivotal step for international pathways.
“This isn’t just competition; it’s about cultural exchange and building West Africa’s rugby foundation,” Nortey said.
With plans for education and lasting impact, the tour marks a milestone in the federation’s continental ambitions.
