Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is expected to report to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service this week as part of ongoing investigations into serious allegations, including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

This was confirmed by the Director-General of the CID, DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, during a media briefing in Accra. She noted that although Chairman Wontumi was initially expected to appear earlier, his legal team had informed the CID that he had been unwell.

“We have received communication from his lawyers regarding his health condition. However, he is expected to report to the CID this week as investigations continue,” DCOP Donkor stated.

The case is believed to be linked to the operations of Akonta Mining, a company Chairman Wontumi is associated with. According to DCOP Donkor, a number of other individuals, including one identified only as Akuakor, are also being investigated in connection with the company’s dealings.

The Police say the investigation forms part of a broader effort to clamp down on financial crimes and ensure transparency in mining operations and other sectors.

More updates are expected as the investigations progress.
