Former Education Minister and Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has officially announced his intention to contest for the flagbearer position of the New Patriotic Party, (NPP).

Dr. Adutwum made the declaration on Tuesday, June 18, 2025, through a Facebook post, just after the NPP announced that its presidential primaries will be held on January 31, 2026.

“With humility, conviction, and a resolute heart, I, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, declare my intent to run for the Flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), should nominations be officially opened by the party,” he wrote.

The NPP has not yet opened nominations, but Dr. Adutwum’s early announcement signals the beginning of what is expected to be a highly competitive race to lead the party into the 2026 general elections.

Dr. Adutwum, who served as Deputy Minister and later Minister for Education under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is known for his background in educational policy and reform. He holds a PhD in Educational Policy and has years of experience both in Ghana and the United States.

He holds a Bachelor of Science (BSc Hons) degree from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), completed in 1990. Dr. Adutwum then pursued further studies in the United States, earning a Postgraduate Diploma (Credential) from Chapman University in 1996, followed by a Master of Education (M.Ed) degree from the University of La Verne in 1997.

He completed his academic journey with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Southern California in June 2007.
