The University for Development Studies (UDS) has launched a groundbreaking Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) programme in Dagbani, marking a significant stride in promoting indigenous language education in Northern Ghana.
According to the Head of Department of Dagbani at UDS, the programme aligns with the university’s mission to foster inclusive education and elevate the status of local languages within Ghana’s formal education system.
The programme, which began in 2024 with 22 students, saw a steady enrollment of 20 students in its second year. Experts at UDS stress that studying Dagbani enhances literacy and cognitive development, particularly for learners who begin education in their mother tongue.
The Dagbamba community is lauding UDS for introducing of a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) programme in Dagbani, viewing it as a vital step towards preserving cultural heritage and boosting local language education in Northern Ghana.

UDS is seeking support from stakeholders, including traditional leaders and the Dagbamba diaspora, to expand the programme’s reach and impact. With sustained backing, the B.Ed. Dagbani programme could set a precedent for indigenous language education in Ghana and beyon
The university is calling for collaboration with traditional leaders, policymakers, and the Dagbamba community to bolster the programme’s growth and promote Dagbani education across the Dagbon Kingdom.
