Residents of Akwatia Township and its neighbouring towns experienced a sudden power outage on Thursday night after a fire broke out at the Akwatia substation.
The Ghana Grid Company LTD (GRIDCo) has confirmed the incident, which occurred at 20:00 hours on May 30, 2024, resulting in a significant disruption to the power supply.

The affected areas include Akwatia Township, Oda, Kade, Asamankese, and other adjoining towns. Residents have been left without electricity, causing significant inconvenience and disruption to daily activities.
In an official statement, GRIDCo assured the public that their engineers are working tirelessly to address the fault and restore power as swiftly as possible. The company emphasized their commitment to resolving the issue and expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to the affected communities.
“GRIDCo apologizes for the inconveniences caused and appreciates the patience and understanding of the residents during this period,” the statement read”.
While the exact cause of the fire at the substation is yet to be determined, GRIDCo has initiated an investigation to ascertain the circumstances leading to the incident. In the meantime, residents have been advised to take necessary precautions and prepare for potential extended periods without power.
