Minister for Food and Agriculture, Mr. Eric Opoku has reiterated his commitment to ensuring the Ghanaian market has adequate tomato supply by reaching an agreement with Maphix farms to supply 3,000 tonnes of tomatoes.

Maphlix Farms, located at Dawhenya in the Greater Accra Region, is set to supply 3,000 tonnes of tomatoes to the Ghanaian market, reinforcing efforts to boost local production and enhance food security. This development comes at a critical time following the recent ban on tomato exports by Burkina Faso.

The development was revealed during a working visit by the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. Eric Opoku, as part of the Ministry’s ongoing engagement with key private sector actors to strengthen agricultural productivity and reduce import dependency.

Mr. Opoku commended the farm’s adoption of modern, technology-driven practices, including efficient irrigation systems, nursery operations, and expanded open-field cultivation. He noted that these interventions are expected to significantly increase output and ensure a reliable supply of tomatoes.

It was also made known that harvesting has already commenced, with produce being harvested every three days, a development that is expected to stabilize supply and help moderate market prices.

The Minister further urged consumers and traders to remain calm. He also highlighted ongoing collaboration with research institutions to develop improved, climate-resilient seed varieties to enhance the quality and shelf-life of locally produced tomatoes.
