Ghana has been elected as the First Vice Chair of the Bureau of the 6th Specialized Technical Committee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Water and Environment (STC-ARDWE-6) of the African Union (AU), during the ongoing sessions at the AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa.

The election marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s leadership on the continent, highlighting the country’s growing commitment to promoting sustainable agriculture, fisheries, and environmental management. The achievement follows the visionary leadership and direction of the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur (MP).

Although the position carries a two year renewable tenure, Ghana has temporarily assumed the role of Chairing the current STC session following sanctions imposed on Cameroon the member state initially elected as Chair. This development underscores Ghana’s readiness to provide strong leadership and contribute meaningfully to policy dialogue within the African Union.

As part of this engagement, Professor Wisdom Akpalu, Chairman of the Fisheries Commission of Ghana, is presiding over the Technical and Experts Session of the STC from October 21 to 23, 2025. His leadership will pave the way for the Ministerial Session, scheduled for October 24, 2025.

Ghana’s election to this high level position reaffirms its dedication to regional collaboration and its strategic role in advancing sustainable agricultural development and environmental stewardship across Africa.
