The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur, has presented seven outboard motors to artisanal canoe owners in Senya Breku whose equipment was stolen during a violent pirate attack.

The intervention, carried out on Tuesday, March 3, forms part of efforts to cushion affected fishermen and restore livelihoods disrupted by the attack. The presentation follows a traumatic incident on Thursday, February 26, when armed men reportedly attacked fishermen off the coast of Senya Breku in the Central Region.

A total of 71 fishermen were affected in the attack. Though all were later rescued, many were left stranded at sea for hours without engines to power their canoes back to safety.

The victims, who had set out in the early hours to fish, were said to be returning to shore when their attackers, operating a black boat, allegedly opened fire and made away with outboard motors and generator sets.

The incident sparked widespread concern among fishing communities along the coast, with calls for urgent intervention to prevent a recurrence.

Presenting the motors, the Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare of fishermen and ensuring security within Ghana’s coastal waters.
