The Dialysis Unit at the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi has been shut down due to non-payment of consumables supplied to the unit.
This has left kidney patients in the region stranded and who without dialysis may die within weeks, as they are forced to travel long distances to either the Central or Greater Accra Regions for treatment.
In October last year, the Effia-Nkwanta Hospital entered into an agreement with VAO Engineering Services to supply consumables to its new Dialysis Unit with a promise to pay after the supply has been made; however, that has not happened.
According to patients, this is worsening their plights as driving long hours leaves them tired and drains them financially.
A young lady who assists her father to undergo dialysis told Radio Ghana that the situation is very frustrating and appealed to the appropriate authorities to fix the issue with the urgency it deserves.
Meanwhile, Medical Director of the facility, Dr. Joseph Tambil, who spoke to GBC’s Regional Correspondent, admitted that the facility had run out of supplies and had been shut down for almost a month.
He was however quick to add that Management will be receiving a consignment in the next few days to resume treatment.
