Head of Urology at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), Dr. Mary Monney-Bortey, and Medical Officer at the Urology Department, Dr. Dennis Achio, have revealed that blood seen in men’s semen after ejaculation could possibly be caused by prostate cancer.
“Most men come to the hospital reporting that they see blood in their semen when they ejaculate,” Dr. Monney-Bortey said.
According to her, this usually means that the cancer has spread into a portion of the prostate known as the seminal vesicles.
Speaking in an interview on GTV’s Breakfast Show, she clarified that this is not an early sign, but indicates a more advanced stage of the cancer.
Medical Officer Dr. Dennis Achio noted that men often avoid screening, even though early detection could save lives. He linked this resistance to socio-cultural beliefs, citing instances where men believe that prostate cancer is a spiritual problem, hence their reluctance to seek medical help.
According to Dr. Achio, others have said they feel uncomfortable having to strip naked for doctors to carry out a thorough examination of the prostate through the rectum.
He urged men to visit hospitals regularly for early detection, stressing that it can save lives.
