Some Residents of Essikado in the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolis have appealed to government to as a matter of urgency come to the aid of the children’s ward of the Essikado hospital to help nursing mothers and pregnant women to have access to quality healthcare.

They asked for proper retooling and refurbishment of the facility since it is not conducive for nursing mothers and children. The appeal was made when members of a Takoradi-based NGO, Golden Mother’s Vision International toured the Essikado Hospital to find out challenges confronting it.

Executive Director of the NGO, Mrs Abundant Hayford Aggrey called on government to consider supporting major health facilities in the Western Region since most of them have similar challenges.

Good healthcare delivery is one of the major concerns of the government. As part of government’s initiative to upgrade, improve and provide quality health care delivery in the country, there are other hospitals and CHIPS compound in the western region especially the SekondiTakoradi metropolis.

A visit by the Golden Mother’s Vision International, an NGO based in the region, to some hospitals and CHIPS Compounds revealed some challenges that pose health threats to pregnant women and children. Mrs. Abundant Hayford Aggrey, the Chief Executive of the NGO has this to say.

A Pediatric nurse in Incharge of the Neonatal intensive care unit, Bryony Brookman-Eshun spoke about the need for the hospital to have more beds for the children’s ward and if possible, a new facility for the children since they sometimes share a room with those in the emergency ward when they are on admission.

The Medical Superintendent of the Essikado Hospital, Dr. Anane Frimpong made a passionate appeal to government not to let the legacies of Ghana’s first President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah to go to waste since he built the hospital as a polyclinic in 1964.
