President John Dramani Mahama has assured the Christian Council of Ghana that he will sign the Family Values Bill into law if Parliament debates, amends, endorses and passes it. He gave this assurance at the Jubilee House when the Council paid a courtesy call on him on Tuesday, November 18, 2025.
President Mahama explained that the bill, which was before the previous administration, was never submitted to the President for assent because of a legal injunction that stopped the Speaker of Parliament from transmitting it.
He said that by the constitution, any bill that is not assented to before the end of a parliamentary term automatically expires. This means the Family Values Bill must now be reintroduced in Parliament.
President Mahama stressed that his government’s position on family values remains firm adding that marriage is between a man and a woman and that gender is determined at birth stating that the family is the foundation of the nation.
He added that his government’s view on the matter aligns with those of the Christian Council, and he supports the reintroduction of the bill so Parliament can debate it fully.
