Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has responded to claims that former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta should be given time to recuperate in the United States, asking “Is it only in America that one can recuperate? He can come home and recuperate as well. We have the medical staff to help him.”
He stated that, there are people with prostate cancers in Ghana who are treating themselves here so Ofori Atta can come home and recover.
Speaking on Newsfile on Saturday, January 10, 2025, Dr. Ayine emphasized that, Ofori-Atta will receive fair treatment and due process if extradited to Ghana, stating “Ken Ofori-Atta is not a person that will come here and we will treat him very shabbily. He will be accorded due process of law and his fair trial rights will be guaranteed”.
He also explained the delay in the extradition process explaining that, with the number of lawyers defending Ofori Atta in the States, it would not take a day’s work to bring him back home.
Ken Ofori-Atta was arrested by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on January 6, 2026, due to an extradition request from Ghana. Dr. Ayine confirmed that Ofori-Atta’s US visa was revoked in July 2025, and he was given until November 29, 2025 to leave the country. The Ghanaian government has formally requested Ofori-Atta’s extradition to face 78 corruption-related charges.
