The Ashanti Regional Security Council has declared the KNUST Campus a Security Zone until further notice.

This follows intelligence picked up by the Security Council of intended disturbances on campus.

Chairman of the Council, Simon Osei-Mensah, says anyone who directly or indirectly engages in activities that disturb the peace on KNUST Campus will be dealt with according to law.

He directs persons or groups with grievances against KNUST to report to the appropriate authorities for the necessary action to be taken. He spoke on Behind the News

Meanwhile, the SRC, and Graduate Students Association of Ghana, GRASAG of KNUST, have distanced themselves from a planned demonstration by Students of Katanga and Unity Halls.

At a news conference in Kumasi, the two groups allayed the fears of students, parents and management of any disturbances that will undermine a safe and peaceful environment before school re-opens next week.

There have been agitations among students and alumni of the KNUST particularly the Katanga and Unity Halls of residence following the conversion of the once all male Halls into unisex by the university’s management last year.

This resulted in violent student disturbances that caused injuries to some staff members and students and the destruction of properties.

The SRC President, Charles Adu Baah, at the news conference cautioned the two halls and students against any act and tendencies that could negatively affect peace and security on campus.

The President of GRASAG, Maxwell Essan Mensah, affirmed the trust and belief in the Chancellor of the University to address issues as captured in the fact-finding committee’s report in the interest of the KNUST.
