President John Dramani Mahama will travel to the United States on Monday to lead Ghana’s delegation to a special session on reparatory justice at the United Nations.

‎The visit, which will take him to New York and Pennsylvania, will focus on reparatory justice and the remembrance of victims of the transatlantic slave trade.

‎On Tuesday March 24, 2026, President Mahama is expected to deliver the keynote address at a high-level event at the UN Headquarters. The event, themed “Reparatory Justice for the Trafficking of Enslaved Africans and the Racialised Chattel Enslavement of Africans,” will bring together world leaders and dignitaries to discuss historical injustices.

‎As part of the programme, the President will take part in a wreath-laying ceremony at the African Burial Ground National Monument to honour enslaved Africans.

‎On Wednesday March 25, 2026, President Mahama will address the UN General Assembly during the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. He is expected to present Ghana’s position, which has been adopted by the African Union, calling for the recognition of slavery as one of the gravest crimes against humanity.

‎The President’s trip will also include a visit to Lincoln University, where he will deliver another keynote speech. He is also scheduled to meet members of the Ghanaian community at Temple University.

‎The visit is seen as part of Ghana’s efforts to push for global recognition and action on reparatory justice for Africans and people of African descent.
