Member of the health committee in Parliament, Mohammed Sherif Abdul-Khaliq has lauded individual and government effort in providing free sanitary pads to girl students and the girl child in general but has raised concern about the privacy needed to change themselves as well as the mode of disposal.

According to him, “provision of the sanitary pads is excellent but we must move an inch further by providing points of disposal for them”.

Speaking on the GTV’s breakfast show on Monday, November 17, 2025, Mr. Abdul-Khaliq explained that school facilities needed to provide adequate privacy for girl students to change themselves during school hours to avoid going home and returning for the same purpose.

According to him, government providing free sanitary pads is not enough; schools must ensure there are points of disposal for the girls to dispose off used pads.

“Since they are medical waste, we should be concerned about where they are being disposed”, he said.

Mr. Abdul-Khaliq also addressed concerns about furnishing hospitals where no patient would have to sleep on floors, explaining that the government is working on policies and won’t make promises they can’t keep.

“I wouldn’t say all hospitals would be furnished next year because that would be unfair to the Ghanaian people,” he said, assuring that the government is realistic and committed to putting policies in place to address these issues.
