Ghana took a major step toward advancing para-sports with the official inauguration of its first Para Swimming Association on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. The event was held at the headquarters of the National Paralympic Committee (NPC), where the association’s executive members were unveiled and sworn into office.
The ceremony was led by Samson Deen, President of the NPC, who underscored the importance of inclusivity and the development of para-sports in Ghana, emphasizing that this milestone would unlock new opportunities for athletes with disabilities nationwide.
The newly formed Ghana Para-Swimming Association boasts a diverse and dedicated leadership team committed to fostering growth and representation in the sport. The board includes notable figures such as Nana Twum Barimah as Patron, Ayishatu Farida Iddriss as President, and Kwesi Poku Bosompim and Masahudu Mohammed serving as the 1st and 2nd Vice Presidents, respectively.

Kendrick Aryee-Osumanu was appointed as Secretary-General and Treasurer, with Seth Nti serving as Deputy Secretary-General. These individuals are tasked with steering the association toward national and international success for Ghanaian para-swimmers.
In addition to the leadership, the board comprises experienced members like Monica Younge, Mary Apedo, Captain George Nbuno Asabia and Dr. Joel Korankye. The composition of the team reflects a broad spectrum of expertise and backgrounds, all united by a common goal, to promote para-swimming and create a structured platform for athletes with disabilities to excel.
The inauguration was attended by various stakeholders, including sports officials, community leaders and representatives of disability advocacy groups, highlighting widespread support for the initiative.
The Ghana Para-Swimming Association’s establishment is set to open new pathways for athletes, with plans to collaborate with international bodies to enhance training and competition opportunities.
This initiative is expected to boost Ghana’s presence in global para-sports and serve as a catalyst for societal change, promoting resilience, inclusion and the celebration of diverse talents. With this historic move, Ghana is poised to make a lasting impact on the para-sports community and inspire future generations of para-athletes.
