Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has threatened to sue a New Patriotic Party loyalist, P.K. Sarpong, over allegations that he received a luxury Lexus vehicle as a gift.
‘’Notice is hereby served for you to do the needful or prepare to face the full consequence of your reckless discretion’’, the Minister wrote on his Facebook page.
Mr Sarpong made the claims on his Facebook page, addressing the President while stating that the vehicle was a gift from an unnamed individual.
‘’This top of the range Lexus your Minister for Communication is driving is a gift from someone to him. You recently launched a code of ethics for your appointees to stay away from such things’’, he said.
Mr S.K. Sarpong however refused to reveal a name as to the giver of the gift. ‘’I am keeping the name of the one who gifted him this Lexus to my chest for now. Let me repeat, this unregistered Lexus your appointee is using is a gift to him’’, Sarpong reiterated on his Facebook page.
Sarpong’s post claimed that George’s possession of the vehicle violated a directive issued by President John Dramani Mahama to his ministers. However, Sam George’s lawyers have described the publication as “categorically false” and “defamatory and injurious.”
Our client has brought to our attention a publication made by you on your Facebook page in which you falsely allege that Samuel Nartey George received a Lexus vehicle as a gift. This statement is categorically false. You are fully aware that your publication is devoid of truth’’, the letter issued by Sam George’s lawyers read.
The Communications Minister through his lawyers, has demanded that Sarpong retract the statement, apologize, and remove the post from his Facebook page within seven days. Failure to comply with the demands may result in legal action, including a defamation suit.
The ultimatum expires on May 27, 2025, giving Sarpong a week to comply with the demands. If Sarpong fails to comply, George may proceed with filing a defamation suit.
