Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James has said he is unsure about his future with the team after the Lakers were swept 4–0 by the defending NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2025–26 Western Conference playoffs.

The 41‑year‑old, out of contract at the end of the season, did not rule out staying with the Lakers, retiring, or moving elsewhere, declaring after Game 4 that the loss has left him “still fresh from losing” and uncertain about what comes next.

End of a tough playoff run

The Lakers’ season ended with an 115–110 defeat in Game 4, a loss in which James recorded 24 points and 12 rebounds in 40 minutes. The Thunder’s defensive intensity and depth exposed the Lakers’ roster, and the clean sweep has intensified questions about the team’s direction and James’ role in it.

Despite the early exit, James insisted he does not view the year as a disappointment, saying: “Obviously we fell a little short, but I’m not looking at my year as a disappointment, that’s for damn sure.”

Contract and possible paths

James’ current deal with the Lakers has expired, leaving him a free agent this summer. Reports indicate several teams could enter the fray if he decides to continue playing, but the veteran has said he needs time away from the spotlight to recalibrate with his family and support circle before choosing between retirement, a new contract with the Lakers, or a final stint elsewhere.

The uncertainty surrounding his status has turned the quiet end of the Lakers’ campaign into one of the NBA’s biggest off‑season storylines.
